Emmitt Till’s family immediately went up in arms after hearing the line and the backlash even caused Wayne to issue a formal apology. According to the associated press PepsiCo issued a statement saying that Wayne’s “offensive reference to a revered civil rights icon does not reflect the values of our brand,” causing them to cut ties. A publicist for Weezy says the parting was “amicable” and over “creative differences,” to which she concluded, “That’s about all I can tell you at this time.”
