Los Angeles just may be the city to work in, as it considers to set its minimum wage to over $15 for a certain profession; hit the jump for more!
Washington, New York and Detroit – only three of the 100+ cities participating in a protest to raise the federal minimum wage. “Fight for 15,” seems to be fast-food workers’ motto. All around the country, we have workers on strike, walking into work with pick-it signs, chanting slogans such as, “hey hey, ho ho, $7.40 has got to go!” Tyeisha Batts, 27, protesting in New York makes $7.25hr. “My boss took me off the schedule because she knows I’m participating,” to raise the minimum wage to $15hr. States, such as, New Jersey, California, and Connecticut have changed the amount in what they are paying for the bare minimum. I guess that’s a start. These people may have some luck. In a city like New York, where $7.25 won’t get you far at all, officials need to commit. Especially with Presidet Obama lowering the hours a part-time worker is allowed.
We all have had a minimum wage job before where we had to cook, clean, and deal with impatient, moody customers all day, and some of us still do. Many of the people who maintain these low paying jobs for extensive periods of time usually expect some sort of raise after a few months or at MOST a year. After 20 years cooking burgers by the hot and greasy fryer for the national chain, Tyree Johnson STILL makes just the minimum wage. That’s $8.25 an hour in 44-year-old Johnson’s hometown of Chicago, where he works at two different McDonald’s restaurants. This is anything but ethical.Read more below. Governor Adndrew Cuomo has vowed to not allow any salary increases for state legislators unless the minimum wage issue is addressed. The initiative which is tied into a decriminalization of marijuana proposal is an attempt by Cuomo to mitigate the problems in communities through the state but most notably New York City. The city’s hourly wage for its lowest-paid workers will hit $10.24, more than $2 above the California minimum wage and nearly $3 more than the working wage set by the federal government. @WiLMajor
