Author and educator Michael Eric Dyson is decoding the lyrics of rapper Jay-Z to teach students at Georgetown University about race, gender and poverty. Many may agree that a course of this nature is a great way to approach the elements of sociology in modern day society. Georgetown Class Focuses On Jay-Z’s Lyrics And Career
This is so dope and I’m totally jealous that my college never offered a class as awesome as this one! A class being offered at Georgetown University will be focused on the career and lyrics of Jay-Z. Sociology of Hip Hop: Jay-Z, which will be taught by Michael Eric Dyson, will be open to students this coming up semester. Dyson, who is a friend of Hov’s, has previously taught classes on Marvin Gaye and Tupac Shakur and says that the Jay-Z class will “confront topics present in any sociology course: racial and gender identity, sexuality, capitalism and economic inequality.” Read more about the class and what Jay said about it after the jump.
