At the age of 63, Kalief Browder’s brother Venida Browder died Friday in the Bronx. Though she suffered a heart attack, many would say she ultimately died from a broken heart.

In 2010, the then-16-year-old Kalief was arrested after being accused of stealing a backpack by a fellow teen. Since his family couldn’t make the $3,000 bail, he ended up spending three years at Rikers – where he was mercilessly beat by guards and even spent 400 days in solitary confinement. The charges were later dropped and he was released, but his depression was so severe, he ended up hanging himself last summer. He was 22.

Venida Browder has been an advocate for justice for her son and civil rights since the arrest, and just earlier this month, appeared at a press conference with Jay Z to announce he would be producing a six-part documentary on Kalief’s life.

“She was a woman of incredible grace and compassion who tirelessly fought for justice for her son Kalief and who championed the civil rights of others in our city,” Venida’s lawyer, Paul Prestia, said. “But the stress from this crusade coupled with the strain of the pending lawsuits against the city and the pain from the death were too much to for her to bear. In my opinion she literally died of a broken heart.”

Rest in peace, Venida. You’re with your son now!
