South Park is back as the season 20 premiere aired Sept. 14 on Comedy Central. As the animated series often responds to news and current events, the premiere episode took on one of the biggest headlines in the news, Colin Kaepernick’s protest.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback started a national debate when he decided to sit, and later kneel for the national anthem rather than stand. Kaepernick says he’s the protesting against racism, inequality, oppression, and police brutality against black people and other minorities.
During the premiere episode, JJ Abrams is mocked for his role in rebooting the Star Wars franchise, “The Force Awakens,” which he directed, is often ridiculed for being the same as the original Star Wars film. In the cartoon, Abrams is hired by the government to “reboot” the National Anthem. While the characters are at a football game, the anthem is the same, but the announcer tells everyone to rise, sit or take a knee to honor America, therefore making the protest method useless, so JJ Abrams is credited with ‘fixing America.’
In the promo clip they introduced a real different national anthem with “Cops are Pigs” instead of the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
