In a sport that’s dominated by black men, this probably wasn’t the smartest thing to say. Kendall Marshall has played in just 9 games with the Philadelphia Sixers this season averaging about 16.2 minutes per game. His father Dennis Marshall isn’t happy about that and attributed it to racism.
“I always said there was racism in sports,” Dennis Marshall tweeted on his private Twitter account Saturday, per Keith Pompey of thePhiladelphia Inquirer. “White guys in basketball are getting every chance to succeed even when they aren’t doing (expletive).”
He also directed another tweet at an unnamed 76ers player, whom Pompey believes to be Nik Stauskas.
“How are you a ‘shooter’ and shooting 27 percent from three?” Marshall wrote, per Pompey. “Can’t guard but play a lot. What do you think the reason is?”
Of course Marshall received quite a bit of backlash from the comments with many people saying Kendall just isn’t very good which is why he isn’t getting playing time.
Marshall has since issued an apology for the series of tweets.
“I apologize to all those associated with the Sixers,” he said, per Jake Pavorsky of SB Nation’s Liberty Ballers. “I am ashamed and embarrassed by my actions. I have sent a letter of apology to the Sixers.”
