The professional football career of Michael Sam appears to be over for good after he took to twitter to explain he is walking away. Sam has been with the Montreal Alouettes since the start of this season but he had already taken a leave of absence to deal with “personal issues”. There were already reports his teammates weren’t feeling him and the treatment he was getting so maybe this is for the best.

Sam was a very good college football player in the best conference in the country. But as we see each year, talent at the college level doesn’t always translate to talent at the pro level no matter who you are.

It hasn’t worked out for Sam and combine that with the fact of him being the first openly gay player in the NFL and football in general, it became more circus than substance.

For his credit, Sam appears to have recognized things aren’t right and he just doesn’t seem happy playing football so I actually believe walking away is for the best.
