Although he claims that shooting an unarmed Michael Brown was “not a race issue,” former officer Darren Wilson sure has turned the spoken upon topics into black and white. In his latest interview, Wilson opened up to The New Yorker about the day that changed his life, and what’s happened to his life post-acquittal.

According to what Wilson told The New Yorker, he had a round childhood [don’t we all], and while his mother was apart of those rough spots, when she passed away in 2002, he felt like the hard times got worse. His “directionless” lifestyle is what forced him to become an officer, however, he made it clear that he as a beginner, he “wanted to work on the poor north side of St. Louis” to get the worst or his career over with. “You go there and you do three to five years, get your experience, you can kind of write your own ticket,” he says.

I guess it worked out for Wilson up until he decided to stop Brown and a friend in August of 2014. He may have been acquitted of Brown’s murder, but he now lives in seclusion in a home that’s not in his name. He was able to purchase the home with the $500,000 in donations sent his way. Wilson admitted that his reputation as an officer is tarnished, so he could not get work in that field; working in a boot factory was his best bet, although he had to quit that job because reporters pegged his location.

Nowadays, the ex-cop just sits around, not dwelling on and the past, doing interviews to discuss how torn down the Black communities are.

When asked if he thought young people around St. Louis use the racism of police in past decades as an excuse, Wilson said: “I think so.”

There’s a lack of jobs everywhere,” he said. “But there’s also lack of initiative to get a job. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.”

With the mind of negativity going into the ‘poor side of St. Louis’ it’s no wonder he ended up in this position. Seems like there is no hope for the people of St. Louis, and Wilson was not making an attempt to change that.
