Several citizens in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn are recovering after a four-story building nearly crushed them. With the building vacant for quite some time, requests to have the residential/commercial structure demolish were neglected until it came tumbling down earlier this afternoon. Find out how the building collapsed after the jump!
Earlier this afternoon (July 14), a four-story building partially collapsed and injured three citizens who were waking by when it happened. The building, located at 1438 Fulton St., collapsed after pieces from the roof began falling on the ground. Soon afterwards, the upper floors came crashing down to the pavement.
“The crown in front of the building on top of the roof fell off and everyone was looking,” said Leslie Greene, 27, who works at a clothing store across the street. “About 15 seconds later the rest of the building came down and everyone went running.”
Nearly 100 of NYFD’s finest arrived to investigate the scene and use cherry pickers to clear out the debris. According to officials, the building had filed an demolition application on Dec. 12 of last year, but no permit was issued. The city has also filed complaints against the structure in 2012 for a damaged construction fence that looked like it could collapse and another 2011 complaint about falling bricks.
With Fulton St. and the C-Train which bypasses Kingston-Throop Avenue both shut down, you know traffic was more than a mess. Check out the photo of the wreck in the gallery!
