Nichelle Nichols aka Lieutenant Nyota Uhura from Star Trek suffered a mild stroke on the evening of June 3rd. Hit the jump for more info on the condition of this television icon.
TMZ reports Nichols is “awake and resting comfortably at an L.A. hospital.” Currently Nichols is under going tests to determine the severity and cause of the stroke.
Nichelle Nichols is best known as Lt. Nyota Uhura from Star Trek The Original Series and 6 Star Trek movies that followed. She had a very successful career as a singer even before acting. Singing with such greats as Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton. As Lt. Uhura, Nichols has inspired many African American woman, including Whoopi Goldberg who has publicly expressed her love of Nichols and the character of Lt. Uhura. NASA even had Nichols star in an ad campaign to encourage women and African-Americans to join. Nichols along with her Star Trek co-star William Shatner, had the first interracial kiss ever televised!
