As much as I would like not to believe it, racism is alive in 2015. Photos and a video surfaced on Instagram of a notice that was posted in the elevator of an Irvine, California apartment complex. The notice addressed noise complaints and specifically targeted the Black community within the complex.
@teyent_theequeenb Instagram user and resident of the Toscana Apartments posted on her account the notice she found in the elevator. The notice was from the Irvine Apartment Company and was asking residents to be mindful of the noise level during the evening hours. However at the bottom on the paper was a special reminder for the African American residents.
It read in bold text:
We would also like to remind our African-American residents to keep conversation volume down and reduce music levels between 10:00pm and 7:00am. We have received multiple complaints.
The woman who posted the notice on her IG said this, “This is what it means to be black in Irvine,” she says. “Generalizations.” Her friend chimes in: “Blatant racism, with no regard to our personal feelings.”
She also went ahead and did a little investigating of her own and found that out of the notice was only posted in her building. She said, “Only two are posted, and it’s just in my building,” she added “And I’m black. WE ALL BLACK.”
This incident just adds to a growing number of racially charged incidents from around the country. According to California Fair Employment and Housing Act and the Unruh Civil Rights Act this is illegal on all levels, as it should be.
Toscana Management has not yet made a statement regarding this incident.
