Steve Nash announced his retirement from the NBA today in an unusual way. Rather than a big press conference or trying to get back on the court for a farewell tour, Nash chose to write about his own retirement, via Derek Jeter’s website “The Players Tribune”. Nash with the Lakers never really worked out due to constant injuries, but nobody should forget how amazing of a player Nash was in his prime and the MVP trophies he has to back it up. He never won a title but his career is destined to end up in the Hall of Fame without question.

Here is a small excerpt from his editorial he published this morning.

I’m retiring.

I heard someone once say there comes a day when they tell us all that we can’t play anymore. We’re not good enough. Surplus to requirements. Too slow, maybe. When you’re a teenager with outsized dreams and a growing obsession, and someone tells you this ain’t gonna last forever, it’s scary. I never forgot it.

So what did I do? Stayed obsessed. Set goals. Worked. Dreamed. Schemed. Pushed myself beyond what was normal or expected. I looked at my hero, Isiah Thomas, and thought to myself, “OK, I’m nowhere near the player he is but if I get better every day for 5 or 10 years, why can’t I be as good as him?”

Steve really wrote a heartfelt piece where he tried to thank as many people as possible. If I was to post the entire thing here you would be reading forever but you really should give it a read at The Players Tribune and remember how great Nash was and what he did for the game.
