The Brooklyn Nets went all out in 2013 in an attempt to win an NBA championship but unfortunately for them, their efforts failed. Among those moves was the blockbuster trade that sent Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry to the Nets in exchange for Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries, Keith Bogans, Kris Joseph, MarShon Brooks and three future first-round picks to the Boston Celtics. Looking back on the trade, Wallace wasn’t shy in expressing his feelings.
“It was one of those stories of a get-rich-quick scheme. You either hit it big or you don’t,” Wallace told the New York Daily News. “They took a gamble. It backfired.”
It was a get rich quick scheme in terms of trying to get a great team quickly to win a championship but it was certainly a costly quest. It costed Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov $144 million in salary and luxury taxes. That’s a small dent for the Russian billionaire but it set a record for the most expensive roster in NBA history.
The Celtics beat the Nets 89-81 when they faced off on Wednesday night without their star point guard Rajon Rondo, who was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. Wallace did not play, he was listed as DNP- coach’s decision.
