André 3000 not only reveals how he really felt about Outkast’s 20th anniversary reunion tour meant, but he also reveals the meaning behind his jumpsuits.
André 3000 strutted on stage with jumpsuits donning various phrases throughout the reunion tour. One in particular, wearing the words. “SOLD OUT.” Well, he wore that jumpsuit because he felt “like a sellout.”
“I didn’t wanna do the tour,” he told Fader recently. “We hadn’t performed in 10 years. It was old songs. I felt weird about going out on stage and doing it again. I felt like people would be like, ‘Y’all are doing all these festivals, y’all are just doing it for money.’ And I felt like a sellout, honestly. So I was like, if I’m in on the joke, I’ll feel cool about it.”
In addition to not wanting to perform “old songs,” he didn’t even want to be there. But then, a fresh idea come to him that revamped his spirit about being on tour — jumpsuits.
“I didn’t wanna do the tour,” he added. “We hadn’t performed in 10 years. It was old songs. I’m like, ‘How am I gonna present these songs? I don’t have nothing new to say. So I was like, maybe I can start saying new stuff while doing these old songs. It became a theme where I was more excited about this than the actual show. This is fun, running out in these.”
André’s jumpsuits are currently on display for Miami’s famed Art Basel. Forty-seven of his tour jumpsuits are on display at Mana Miami in an art exhibit called “i feel ya.” (see photo above)
The show, which runs through December 14, is a collaboration with Savannah College of Art.
