On Monday night, YG premiered his short film Blame It On The Streets in his hometown of Los Angeles, following screenings in New York City and Atlanta. Since he was in his own city, this by far was the biggest screening of the three, and tons of his famous friends showed up to support – from frequent collaborators DJ Mustard and Ty Dolla $ign, to Too $hort, Sage The Gemini, DJ Carisma, Eric Bellinger, IamSu!, Hit-Boy, Karen Civil and even the superstar herself, Ms. Fergie Ferg. The latter recently recruited both YG and Mustard for her new single “L.A. Love (LA LA),” which they all performed together at the American Music Awards on Sunday night.
The screening went down just moments after the Ferguson decision was announced, and both Ty and IamSu! spoke on their disappointment while walking the red carpet.

“It’s very f#cked up,” Ty told HipHopDX. “I just don’t wanna see people f#ck their own neighborhood up like we did ours here in South Central back in the day ‘cause it doesn’t make sense to f#ck your own neighborhood up. But I understand how people feel. That sh*t’s f#cked up. It keeps on happening to us. Something’s gotta f#cking give eventually.”
Su echoed the same sentiments:
“Honestly I’m really disappointed. It kind of made my stomach hurt a little bit. But I’m trying to get my mind off it. I’m here. See all these beautiful Black faces. We alive. We happy. We gotta show people how to stick together. But, I’m really disappointed by that verdict honestly.”
I got to see the screening when it premiered in NYC last week, and I was honestly SO impressed. It has all the makings of classic films like Don’t Be A Menace and Boyz N The Hood, from amazing acting by YG and his friends, to very, very smooth transitions, a really good story line and even some comic relief. I really didn’t know what to expect, particularly as far as the acting goes as YG and his boys are all newbies, but I found myself wishing it was longer when the 30 minutes was up! I encourage you guys to check it out when it drops next month!
