White House officials have reported that the act of sending U.S. Special Operation Forces into Iraq to “advise Iraqis”, is a potential “course of action”, earlier today.
The official continued to state that it is important to know that this is “one of many options” and the group are meant to serve as advisors rather than combat troops. National Security Spokesperson Caitlin Hayden stated;
“The president was very clear that we will not be sending U.S. troops back into combat in Iraq. That remains the case and he has asked his national security team to prepare a range of other options that could help support Iraqi security forces.”
“This force is deploying for the purpose of protecting U.S. citizens and property, if necessary, and is equipped for combat. This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed,”
Obama stated in the letter.
President Obama previously said in a statement Friday that he will not be sending any ‘U.S troops back into combat in Iraq’ leaving an opening for armed units to be sent into Iraq as long as they are not labeled ‘combat troops’.
