Producing a music track is no joke. Even after the artist has laid down their verses, a producer’s job is far from over. There is major work to be done with sampling contracts, making the beats, connecting everything together and most of all connecting with the artist. Without that, the track is no bueno.
XXL sat down with some of hip-hop’s hottest producers and got them to drop a little bit of music making science for the future executive producers.
Hit the jump to find out what talent such as, DJ Drama, DJ Khaled, Organized Noize and Just Blaze had to say on the topic.
Known for working with acts such as Ace Hood, Fat Joe and MMG, DJ Khaled has been at this for a long time. Producing is part of the reason he’s suffereing from so much success.
“The toughest thing is the responsibility,” Khaled says. “The artist relies on you just to make sure everything is good. You have to know that you’re not going to be able sleep or see your family.” Yeah that is a tough one.
“Being an executive producer doesn’t mean that you’re making every beat on the album. It’s more about making sure the Ts are crossed. The Is are dotted, the record’s mixed properly, the mastering is right. And bringing the best performance out of the artist as you can, by any means necessary,” Says Just Blaze. Just Blaze has been accredited to Jay Z’s The Blueprint and Diplomatic Immunity from The Diplomats. Good stuff.
