What has been called the world’s first action figure by collectors and toy makers alike, the G.I. Joe celebrates its 50th birthday this month.
Hasbro introduced the world to this action-toy at the annual toy fair in New York City in early 1964, just before the Vietnam War. Since then, the Joe has come through many changes, but the military-themed toy remains a popular brand wearing the uniforms of the four branches of the U.S. military; Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force.
The 11½-inch action figure came with 21 moving parts, and such accessories as guns, helmets and vehicles.
Just in time for Christmas season, G.I. Joe hit the shelves later in 1964 and soon became a big seller at $4 apiece.
