Obama has been very reluctant on intervening in the 2 1/2 year war tearing Syria apart, yet he finally caved in and organized a meeting with heavy political officials to discuss the issues in Syria, Hit the jump for more detail!
The president has finally arranged for a meeting to discuss the turmoil separating Syria. He arranged for political officials including Secretary of State John Kerry, and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel (who are both out of the country yet still participated despite the distance) to meet in the West Wing of the white house to discuss Syria’s state today.
Although white house officials are careful on the information they are putting out in regards to the meeting they are stating:
“We have a range of options available, and we are going to act very deliberately so that we’re making decisions consistent with our national interest as well as our assessment of what can advance our objectives in Syria”.
President Obama hit the CNN studios for a short interview yesterday, where he stated that although it is unsure whether the chemical weapons attack resulting in the death of 1,000 residents in a Damascus Suburb, can be labeled such he will not tolerate any weapons of mass destruction.
He stated: “getting to some core national interests that the United States has, both in terms of us making sure that weapons of mass destruction are not proliferating, as well as needing to protect our allies, our bases in the region.”
Although Syrian state television has reported that there was chemical materials found in the tunnels on Saturday that had been used by rebels, “rejecting the blame for carrying out a nerve gas attack”, white house officials must analyze every piece of evidence before enacting a plan.
“As we have previously stated, the president has directed the intelligence community to gather facts and evidence so that we can determine what occurred in Syria,” the White House official reiterated”.
“Once we ascertain the facts, the president will make an informed decision about how to respond.”
