Three female high school students who attend St. Margeret’s Secondary, shaved there head for a good cause and got in trouble for it. The girls had cut off all of their hair for a Cancer Foundation event that was held last weekend. Upon arriving to school on Monday they received a bad reception from school administration for the good deed they thought they did. the school’s principal had punished the girls for violating “a ban on “punk, unfeminine or sloppy hair styles””. The principal states that the girls were told, if they were to go through with the hair cut that they must wear wigs in order to attend school. Two of the classmates had wore their wigs to school, yet one did not and was shunned. The principal stated that if she had let them walk around with shaven heads it would become a trend, welcoming others to do the same.
“Can you imagine if I were to say yes, I’d have everybody coming to school with a bald head. Sometimes it’s a fad, so they would take advantage of the situation,” she said”.
One of the mothers of one of the students whom was reprimanded for her good cause was happy that the event was getting news coverage replying to the principals actions:
“I’m glad that it created the awareness that we wanted to create, although our intention was never to shame the school or to shame the principal,” she told Channel News Asia. “I think I just wanted the girls to have the recognition they should have gotten instead of being reprimanded.”
I know we’re supposed to be disciplined at school, but is this just taking it too far? After all it was for a good cause!
