A city east of Benghazzi is currently undergoing a mass jail break that occurred at Koyfiya Prison. A security official from the prison confirmed that the jail break had in fact happened, yet wanted anonymity being that he is not supposed to speak with journalists. The prisoners were held on various charges, many being held on “serious” charges, he stated. The officials are trying to figure out whether the inmates had broken out in a form of protest or if they had been helped in the escape by other forces. Many prisoners headed straight to the streets of Libya’s main cities and began protesting against islamist-allied parties within the cities. Many were arrested soon after the break out yet there are still prisoners that have not been put back into custody. The escape is said to have taken place within and outside of the prison. Inmates had began protesting and rioting inside, “as well as an attack from outside”. The escape is thought to have occurred due to the “residents of the city not being able to tolerate the prison near their homes”.
