At Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, the young boy was walking along an off-limits area when all of sudden he was trapped in an 11-foot hole of sand. With sand piled over the boy, rescuers had to work quick and efficient to save the boy’s life. Within 15 minutes of the incident, emergency responders arrived at the scene.

After being taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health Medical Center, the boy was flown to a hospital in Chicago. Lakeshore ranger, Bruce Rowe said he was told the boy had vital signs, but didn’t know of his condition.

Rowe has been working at lakeshore for almost 22 years and he had this to say, “I have never heard of anything like this here or at other sand dune parks. We won’t let people on the dune again until we know what happened and whether it is safe for them.”
