One of the keys going into Wednesday’s regular-season opener at MetLife Stadium will be the Dallas Cowboys offensive line against the New York Giants monstrous defensive line.
The Cowboys’ O-line has been porous, to put it nicely, this preseason, placing quarterbackTony Romo in harm’s way seemingly every time he drops back.
Meanwhile, the Giants boast the NFL’s deepest defensive line, which just led Big Blue to a Super Bowl championship.
So what can the Cowboys do to slow down the onslaught Wednesday? He knows, but Osi Umenyiora isn’t providing any CliffNotes.
“I’m not going to tell you,” Umenyiora joked on “NFL AM” Monday morning. “I’m not going to divulge the secret to stopping the Giants defensive line, they are going to have to figure that out on their own. Of course it can be done. Every game we go into it’s not like we just go out there and just wreck the quarterback all the time. I mean that is what we’d like to do and that is what we would like people to think, but sometimes we’ve been slowed down but hopefully that won’t happen on Wednesday.”
On the flip side, Umenyiora said the key for the Giants to slowing down Romo and the Cowboys offense is simply getting into the backfield and disrupting the quarterback’s rhythm.
“He has a very quick release, we know he’s not going to sit there and hold the ball he’s going to try and get the ball out quick the receivers are going to run shorter routes they are going to throw quick passes and try to run the ball,” he said. “As many times as we can get back there, I think the key is getting back there and harassing him and pressuring him. Sacks are going to come sometimes they come sometimes they don’t, but the key is getting pressure on him and I think we are going to try our best to do that.”
