A suicidal French math teacher set herself ablaze in a school playground Thursday as horrified students watched during their morning break, officials said.
The unidentified 44-year-old woman strolled to the center of the playground, doused herself with gasoline and started the fire around 10 a.m.
Just an hour earlier, she had taught her first class of the day with no sign of the impending horror.
“She should pull through,” state prosecutor Patrick Mathe told AFP. “It was a desperate act.”
The attempt to kill herself came one day after the teacher and her students at the Jean Moulin secondary school had a contentious meeting over her strict teaching style, parents said.
Students rushed to the aid of the torched teacher, who was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital for treatment of third-degree burns.
The sprawling school sent its 3,000 students home after the suicide try, while setting up a psychological support unit to assist any kids affected by the incident.
