Coach John Fox announced Monday that quarterback Kyle Orton will start the Denver Broncos’ Week 1 game against the Oakland Raiders.

The Broncos made the announcement on their Twitter page. The Denver Post reported Monday that Fox hasn’t decided yet whether Brady Quinn or Tim Tebow would be Orton’s backup.

The announcement comes after Orton’s latest strong preseason performance in which he completed 10 of 13 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills. Orton is 12 of 19 for 172 yards and a touchdown in two preseason games.

“We’ve been working with (Orton) all camp, he’s been with the 1’s (starters),” receiver Eddie Royal told the Post. “I guess there’s not really any surprise to us. It’s nice to know who is going to be back there throwing you the ball on Day 1. We all have had confidence in Kyle since Day 1, so no surprise to us.”

The Broncos began training camp with talk that Tebow might unseat Orton but that debate quickly ended with the latter’s strong play.
