Former NBA referee Troy Raymond died in an apparent suicide in a New Orleans hotel room only hours after police discovered the body of his wife at their home in Spring, Texas, CBS Sports reported Tuesday.
Raymond, a 46-year-old who was also a college basketball referee, was found dead of a single gunshot wound to the head Friday afternoon, Constable Tim Holifield of Montgomery County Precinct said.
At 2:08pm local time that same day, police found the body of his wife, Leslie Anderson Raymond, 41. The medical examiner ruled her cause of death as a homicide by asphyxiation due to manual strangulation.
“We’re not prepared to tell you who’s responsible,” Holified said. “But certainly Mr. Raymond is a person of interest — and his death brings about more questions than answers.”
Sources told CBS Sports that Leslie Raymond had recently asked for a divorce, while Troy Raymond had been informed that he would not be re-hired to work games next season.
Troy Raymond was forced out of the NBA after one season in 2004 because he lied about his resume for the referee’s media guide.
