According to reports, the Perseid Meteor Shower will be visible across many U.S. cities, including NY late Friday evening into early Saturday. This should be cool! Last time there was a meteor shower, I believe it was pretty cloudy and we couldn’t really see it…but today’s weather was absolutely PERFECT and I’m assuming tonight will be the same so let’s hope for clear skies!! Looking for a light show? You may be in for quite the treat during the overnight hours if you look to the sky.
Space.com reports that the Perseid meteor shower will be visible across many U.S. cities, including New York, late Friday night into Saturday morning.
“It’s typically the best meteor shower of the year. It’s been going on since late July, but this is the night when the most meteors are expected to be visible in the night sky,†Tariq Malik, managing editor of Space.com, told 1010 WINS’ Jim Powers.
According to Malik, the Perseid meteor shower originates out of the constellation Perseus. He said that people hoping to catch the shower should look towards the southeast sky or look south and straight up.
“It should appear to pop out of that general area,†he said.
Malik added that the best time to look would be after midnight, between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.
“They’re talking about at least dozens per hour if you have a really dark sky,†he said.
But if you aren’t fortunate to have that dark sky, city lights could inhibit at least some of the view.
Malik said that an expected bright full moon could also cause a disruption to the view. You could end up seeing about 10 to 12 or less depending on light conditions.
“You do want to get away as far as you can from city lights to get the optimum viewing experience,†Malik said.
