NYU’s Langone Medical Center has figured out a new way to check in patients by getting rid of paper work and clipboards and having patients palms scanned.

NYU Langone Medical Center said it is the first hospital in the Northeast to use a biometric infrared scanning system that converts a digital palm image into a unique patient ID. NYU Langone Medical Center said “Vein patterns are 100 times more unique than fingerprints,” which can generate patient ids faster than if they were to use finger prints. If a patient shows up to the hospital without a ID # or is unable to communicate to the staff (i.e. drunk or unconscious), the palm reader can automatically bring up the patients medical records right away showing the patients medical history
