Tiffany Burress never will forget the fateful early morning of Nov. 29, 2008, when her husband used egregiously reckless judgment that cost him a fortune, the prime of his NFL career, and so much more.

Giants star Plaxico Burress took an unregistered .40 caliber Glock pistol into a Manhattan club called the Latin Quarter. The handgun slipped out of his waistband and slid down his leg. He tried to catch it, accidentally pulled the trigger, shot himself in the thigh and asked teammate Antonio Pierce to drive his black Maybach to the hospital.

Then he called his wife.

“He called on his way to the car,” Tiffany says. “So I’m talking to him as he’s getting into the car. He said he’d hurt himself.”

She remembers their conversation:

Tiffany: “Well, how did you hurt yourself?”

Plaxico: “I want you to come here and see yourself.”

Tiffany: “Tell me!”

Plaxico: “I’m on my way to the hospital right now.”

Tiffany: “You gotta tell me right now!”

Plaxico: “I want to tell you to your face. I don’t want to tell you over the phone.”

“Fifty million things were just running through my brain,” Tiffany says now. “How did he hurt himself? He’s going to the hospital — it has to be really serious.”

Earlier that night, Plaxico had dinner in New Jersey with Giants teammate Ahmad Bradshaw before meeting Pierce in Manhattan.

“He wanted me to go,” Tiffany says. “I had a cold.”
