The ceremonial first pitch is usually not something baseball fans pay much attention to, but fans attending the Los Angeles Dodgers’ home game Saturday night are likely to take special notice when Tom Willis takes the mound.

Willis was born without arms. When he throws the first pitch, he will do so with one of his feet.

As part of his “Pitch for Awareness” national tour, Willis is hoping to visit all 30 major league stadiums to promote an understanding that people with disabilities are capable of doing more than others perceive.

“I want to raise people’s awareness of the abilities of a person with a disability,” Willis, 52, said. “Not to focus on what they can’t do but on what they can do.”

Willis hasn’t found that his condition, known as congenital bilateral upper-limb deficiency, limits him in any way. He drives a car using a foot-steering system, pumps his own gas, does his own laundry and currently works as a motivational speaker and independent TV and video producer. He’s able to perform some functions with the aid of a small finger-like appendage on his left side.
