Brooklyn born rapper Yasiin Bey – formerly known as Mos Def- moved himself out of the United States back in 2013 and has been residing in Cape Town, South Africa since. It has been reported Friday (January 15th) that he’s been arrested and banned from the country for five years for presenting a fake passport when trying to leave the South African after overstaying his visitors permit. According to The Home Affairs ministerial spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete, who tweeted out information about Yasiin Bey’s arrest, he came to South Africa legally using his United States passport, however has overstayed the length of his visitor’s permit. When attempting to depart South Africa, he presented “world passport” which turned out to be a false document and now has 14 days to leave the country with the correct paperwork. South Africa’s Home Affairs spokesperson admits he’s a fan but “the law is the law.” Hopefully this can all get worked out! Check out the gallery for more.
