Another Tragedy: 4 People Shot On USC Campus; 2 Suspects In Custody

Another day, another tragedy I have to report on. Last night, a “Halloween massacre” of sorts occurred at the University of Southern California, with 4 people shot by a man after he’d gotten into an argument with someone else. The man he was arguing with was the target of his shooting, but three other bystanders were also caught in the crossfire. Two men were arrested, however, as Asst. Chief John Thomas of the USC Department of Public Safety believes another man was the shooter’s accomplice. Thomas believes this was “totally an isolated incident” and will proceed with classes as scheduled today. The main victim is currently listed in critical condition, while the three others suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Our prayers are with the USC campus and community! Marisa Mendez

Tech Talk Web: Police ID Criminals With Digital Line Up On Facebook!!!

Snitching has gone digital. German police have solved crimes by posting line ups online with Facebook. Don’t be living foul because the Facebook is talking. Hit the jump for the full story. +TatWZA X @ShottaDru Facebook Helps ID Suspects!! Police lineups in Germany have gone digital, with Hanover Police asking people to identify photofits of crime suspects on its Facebook page. The police department has nabbed eight criminals since March 2011 when it started crowdsourcing suspects’ photos via Facebook for its pilot manhunt called “Fahndung via Facebook.” The success has prompted the rest of Germany’s law enforcement to consider using Facebook in the same way. The Hanover Police Department wrote this on its Facebook wall: “Dear Facebook Community, We are pleased with the positive response to our pilot. [It helps] us greatly if you ‘share’ the witness calls and messages.” While police have seen success, citizens of Germany aren’t so sure of the department’s new suspect identification method. Some are concerned the wrongly accused may face undeserved public scrutiny that suspects wouldn’t receive if the photographs were kept confidential. Additionally, photofits — the digital method of constructing a suspect’s image based on a witness’ description — aren’t always accurate. Mashable
