The popular streaming service Spotify has just been hit with a $150 million class action lawsuit over alleged unpaid royalties. The suit was filed Monday (December 28th) by Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker in the Central District Court of California. According to the firm’s founding member David Lowery, Spotify “knowingly, willingly, and unlawfully reproduces and distributes copyrighted compositions without obtaining mechanical licenses,” and they are seeking at least $150 million in damages. With two projects released this year, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late and What A Time To Be Alive, Drake racked up over 1.8 billion streams and 46 million listeners. To compliment Drizzy, Spotify’s most streamed female artist this year was everyone’s favorite bad gal, Rihanna. Rihanna is ending 2015 with over 1 billion streams and 57 million listeners. Congratulations, Ed Sheeran! Ed Sheeran has just set a major Spotify record. The English crooner has just become the first artist to reach 500 million plays on Spotify for a single song. Sheeran’s hit single, “Thinking Out Loud” from his x album is the first to get half a billion streams. Sheeran was excited to learn of the news. He said, Chuffed to hear that ‘Thinking Out Loud’ has had half a billion plays on Spotify,” he continued, “Being the first artist to hit that milestone is amazing.” He later added, “Thanks to all the people who use this as a wedding song, soundtrack to a date, and as a way to woo someone into a Netflix and chill situation.” LOL! Back in September, Michelle Obama launched her #62MILLIONGIRLS campaign, to spread awareness about the 62 million girls worldwide who are not in school. The first lady has received tons of support from celebrities like Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Janelle Monae but also from all those who participated in her hashtag #62MillionGirls and sharing with the world what they learned in learned in school on Twitter and Instagram. Monday (October 11), the First Lady kicks of ‘International Day of the Girl’ with a celebration playlist via Spotify. The playlist is loaded with “girl power” tracks from artists like Beyonce to Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson and Lauryn Hill.
