The largest inmate release in history is set to take place at the end of this month. The Justice Department has confirmed they will release roughly 6,000 inmates from federal prisons and another 8,550 over the next year a part of new sentencing guidelines for drug crimes. The new policy titled “Drug Minus Two” will release at least half of the 100,000 drug offenders serving time in federal prisons and also reduce the sentences of eligible inmates by at least two years. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates explained in a statement, “Even with the Sentencing Commission’s reductions, drug offenders will have served substantial prison sentences. Moreover, these reductions are not automatic. Under the Commission’s directive, Federal judges are required to carefully consider public safety in deciding whether to reduce an inmate’s sentence.”
