Nipsey Hussle Talks Music Lovers Who Have Ponied Up $1000 For “Mailbox Money”

When Nipsey Hussle decided to sell 1,000 copies of the Crenshaw mixtape for $100, some were wondering if the west coast rapper was lackluster. The thing is it was the complete opposite; sheer genius. Yes, you could download the mixtape for free, but if you really respected his music and appreciated the art, $100 was nothing. Nipsey made about $100,000. With his latest mixtape Mailbox Money in rotation, the concept remains the same, however the price has gone up. There has only been 100 physical copies made at the price of $1,000. Guess what? Since it’s December release 60 copies have been sold, making Nipsey’s profit $60,000. The rapper talks to The Guardian about his decision to sell a project – that can be downloaded for free – at such a high price. Hit the bottom for more.

Nipsey Hussle Announces ‘Mailbox Money’ Release Date

In 2013, Nipsey Hussle released the game-changing Crenshaw, becoming the first-ever artist to sell a project for $100. The idea behind it was pretty simple – sure, you can listen and get it for free online, but if you’re really a “fan” and support this artist, then you’ll pay a little extra, get a hard copy AND get a ticket to a private concert and a chance to meet him. Seems like a pretty sweet deal – and it paid off! Nip made over $100,000 doing it this way, with even the legendary Jay Z contributing $1,000 of that number! Now Nip will change the game once again with the release of his forthcoming “album before the album,” Mailbox Money. Releasing on New Year’s Eve, Mailbox Money will be made available in 3 ways – for free on DatPiff, for $10 on iTunes…and for $1,000 via his Proud 2 Pay site. And yes, the latter comes with more than just music.
