BET will pay tribute to the late Prince at the 2016 BET Awards this year, following his untimely passing in April. Many were upset at Madonna’s attempt to honor her friend at the Billboard Music Awards last month, and following that show, BET promised to deliver a much better one. The lineup for the 2016 Afropunk Fest has just been announced, going down August 27 and 28 in Brooklyn at the Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene. With over 60 acts on the bill, performers include Ice Cube, Cee-Lo Green, Janelle Monae, Tyler, The Creator, The Internet, Angel Haze and more.
Janelle Monae is taking her talents to the big screen. The ‘Yoga’ singer has recently landed a role in the upcoming film, ‘Hidden Figures.’ The film is based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s upcoming book Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race. Shetterly tells the story of a group of Black women who gave NASA crucial mathematical data needed to launch the space program’s Friendship 7 mission, which lead to John Glenn becoming the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth in 1962. Janelle Monae will star alongside, ‘Empire’ star Tarji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer. Reports confirm, Henson will play mathematician Katherine Henson, while Monae and Spencer will play her colleagues Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughn. The film is set for release January 13, 2017 and it will be airing on Fox 2000. Click the gallery for more.
