Auto Talk: GM’s business in Iraq is booming

Long before the first U.S. soldier laid a boot on Iraq soil in the first Gulf War, General Motors planned to build a manufacturing facility in the country. According to The Detroit News, the years since haven’t been entirely kind to the automaker’s sales efforts in Iraq. That’s no shock given America’s reputation in the Middle East nation, but its prospects are beginning to look up. Whereas GM once trailed even Renault in sales, the company managed to move 35,000 vehicles last year. Not bad considering the entire new vehicle market in Iraq totaled just 115,000 in 2011. President Obama Addresses The Nation About Our Final Troops Leaving Iraq

Earlier today the last convoy of American troops left Iraq after a war that lasted almost nine years. Although the war began in an aerial bombs,  it ended on a relatively quiet note. The troops left Iraq today at daybreak to head to neighboring Kuwait were at least 4,000 troops will be stationed for a few months. President Obama promised earlier in the year that all of American troops would be out of Iraq and on their way home before Christmas. Last US Troops Have Left Iraq

Early this morning the last American troops in Iraq crossed the Iraqi/Kuwait border official ending the almost nine year war in Iraq. The last convoy of troops were cheering, fist pumping, and hugging each other as they crossed the border. 4,500 American lives were lost in the war and over $800 Billion was spent over the almost nine years. U.S. Fears New Surge Of Al Qaeda Violence After Leaving Iraq

President Obama announced that at the end of the year he would have all of the American troops withdrawn from Iraq. Now senior American and Iraqi officials are expressing growing concern that Al Qaeda may increase the violence in Iraq once American troops leave. U.S. Planning Troop Increase in Persian Gulf

American troops maybe withdrawn from Iraq, but U.S. officials don’t plan on withdrawing all of them from the area. The Obama administration  plans on increasing the amount of American troops in the Persian Gulf later this year. The repositioning of troops will allow the American military to keep a closer eye out on Iran and Iraq. The repositioning will also keep a combat team in Kuwait in case of a collapse of security in Iraq. American troops could remain in the Gulf until as last as 2014. Read more after the jump.
