Although the number of HIV related deaths is on a steady decline, the number of Hepatitis C related deaths are on the rise. Due to condoms, sex education, testing, and treatments the number of deaths due to HIV cases is now down to about 12,700 per year. Now Hepatitis C is becoming the silent killer especially among baby-boomber adults. Over 3.2 million people are currently infected with the virus that is spread via exposure to blood. Foster City drugmaker Gilead recently updated its application with the federal Food and Drug Administration for approval to market its HIV treatment medication Truvada as a HIV prevention pill. Gilead’s application, however, has sparked debate among public health advocates who argue that the wide availability of the drug would discourage safe sex and would, in fact, increase the incidence of HIV.
