Everyone was surprised when the Cleveland Cavaliers chose Anthony Bennett as the No. 1 overall draft pick. It was thought that maybe the Cavs saw something in Bennett that people missed but so far that hasn’t been the case. Instead Bennett has made a case for one of the worst No. 1 picks in NBA history. The ever outspoken Gary Payton was a guest on Fox Sports Live and took the opportunity to give Bennett some tough love and advice.
Gary Payton is one of a dozen people being enshrined as part of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend in Springfield, Mass. Along the way he’s made some noteworthy comments and there’s been a lot of reflection between his era and today’s game. Payton says not only was his era tougher but he and Shawn Kemp were the original Lob City before Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. Read more after the jump.

Together they may have been the greatest alley-oop combination ever. Gary Payton said yesterday that he may on inadvertently given Allen Iverson the idea to skip practice back when he was with the 76ers. We all know what practice I am talking about! Payton said one night he and A.I. were chillin’ having drinks and Iverson asked him how he stays healthy. Payton gave him the honest answer. That then coach George Karl of the Sonics would let him miss practice alot, which put less stress on his body. Iverson then decided he would skip practice on his own without permission.
