It wasn’t a joke, but it turns out that when Autoblog discovered the patent filing for a four-door SLS AMG, we stumbled on drawings that were merely part of the development process and not a car intended for production. In February, when we came across the schematic, it was wondered if Mercedes-Benz had another platform utilizing experiment planned – and frankly, based on the sales of the SLS AMG, the idea that such a car was being considered wasn’t nearly as outrageous as the look of the four-door car itself. Auto Talk: New Acura design chief admits company went “a little overboard” with The Beak
Automotive News reports Toshinobu Minami, the new head of global design for Acura, says the company may have gone “a little overboard at some points” with the company’s shield grille. Minami said Acura has had bad feedback on the design from multiple directions, but says the company isn’t going to “buckle under that pressure.” Instead of scrapping the beak design all together, the designer wants to keep the corporate look while simultaneously reaching further out toward a premium design language. Honda, meanwhile, will receive models with a sportier and more active-looking exterior. Acura recently debuted more demure interpretations of the shield grille on models like the ILX and the NSX Concept. Funk Flex

The engineers at Audi look to be hard at work on a more potent version of the company’s A1 hatchback. Spy photographers spotted this machine out on public streets for testing, and the presence of a set of quad exhaust out back leads us to believe this could be the rumored S1 model. It’s unclear whether this machine will slot under the limited-edition 256-horsepower A1 Quattro or be sold as a less extreme version of the hottest of Audi hatches when that car’s production slots fill up. Photographers report this is a gasoline-powered model, which means the company’s 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine is likely kicking behind the headlights. Funk Flex
