Although Rich Homie Quan has flourished musically over the past year, many dont know the turmoil him and his family are enduring. “I almost thought about giving up rap for a moment,” says Quan. “My uncle got shot this year. My dad got shot this year–he’s still in the hospital. My mother’s in the hospital now. I just lost my grandmother a week ago. All of that within, like, six months.” Quan’s mother was the victim of a poorly-planned surgery; his father was shot six times during a botched robbery. Today [Nov. 21], there is a possibility that the grand jury in the Michael Brown Ferguson shooting are expected to release a decision as to if officer Darren Wilson will be indicted or not for the teen’s execution. The group of Wilson’s peers are allowed to meet up until January, however patience is running thin. Since the horrid day of Brown’s death, the city of Ferguson as been incited with riots, protests and arrests. With the decision waiting to be heard, more arrests have gone underway. Chants of, “Killer cops have got to go!” and more have forced police to arrest two more individuals. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency and called in 400 National Guard troops to back up police. Chicago emcee Common recently suffered the tragic loss of his father, Lonnie “Pops” Lynn. Lynn’s thought-provoking and heartfelt poems played a vital part in the majority of Common’s albums. After the death of his dad, Common had some nice words to share in regards to the man who raised him. “The way he said things made me look at life and the world in a new way, in a different way. They always sparked a thought in my head. His words would always make me strive to achieve higher, to write better, to be more truthful with my words,” Common said.
