Serena Williams grew up in Compton and went on to dominate tennis, a sport with a small number of black faces. Whether it’s penning the Grammy and Oscar winning song “Glory,” or appearing on talk shows discussing the African-American plight, Common has been at the forefront of discussions concerning race and activism. Together the longtime friends and former couple sat down for a candid conversation about fame, race, and gender.
I’ve heard drugs and maybe a special someone but this is quite new. Common says changing a diet and becoming a vegetarian has made him become a better artist. He states he grew up eating all types of unhealthy foods such as hamburgers, barbecue, and bacon. He has now completely threw all of that out of the window.
Common just surprised fans with a remix to his Stevie Wonder featured track “Black America Again”. On the remix though, instead of Stevie singing the chorus, we have a combination of vocals from BJ The Chicago Kid, Bilal, John Legend, and Marsha Ambrosius. The song opens up with Gucci Mane showing a side many haven’t heard before, touching on the struggles of being a black man in a white country. Common also had his G.O.O.D. Music compadre Pusha T close out with a strong sixteen before the final chorus fades out.
