A few days ago, the the Interstate 5 Bridge in Washington state collapsed causing cars and their passengers to plunge into the Skagit River. Thankfully, no one was killed in the bridge collapse. An alarming amount of the nations bridges are classified as “structurally deficient” which doesn’t mean they aren’t safe but does mean that speed and/or weight limits need to be revamped to make the structure safer and an even more alarming number are “functionally obsolete.” Once a bridge has been active for 42 years, it must be repaired or reconstructed and an alarming amount of older bridges have not been touched. Each state in America has about 7-12+% of bridges that are deficient. So why has nothing been done to fix the bridges that are traveled on daily to prevent collapses? President Obama proposed a “Fix It First” plan which would grant about $50 billion to fixing the bridges, especially the ones that need repair ASAP, but when Congress did not avoid the sequester the transportation budget faced a $1.9 billion cut.
