21-year-old Kamaiyah is one of the hottest artists coming out of the Bay Area. The Oakland native saw regional success in 2015 with “How Does It Feel,” paving the way for her highly-buzzed about debut mixtape, A Good Night In The Ghetto, last month, multiple SXSW performances and a spot on XXL’s list for potential 2016 freshmen. You know what else it did? It got the attention of none other than Drizzy Drake, that’s what. It’s not new news that Drake has his finger on the pulse of what’s hot, as he’s consistently co-signed newcomers over the years and given their career an extra boost. Whether with an Instagram post (like Kodak Black) or hopping on their bubbling song (like Future, Migos, Fetty Wap), Drake has had a helping hand in making many of yesterday’s relative unknowns into today’s favorites. (I stress the phrase “helping hand,” though – let’s be clear that these artists were already doing their thing pre-Drake, hence why they even caught his attention. Hell, it still remains to be seen whether he’s only helping them just to maintain his own relevance or actually cares, but that’s neither here nor there…)
