Aaliyah’s Family Are NOT On Board With Lifetime Biopic & Vow To Stop Production!

It was finally announced this week that 17-year-old Disney actress Zendaya Coleman would play the late Aaliyah in a biopic that has been in talks for such a long time, and it was also revealed that it would air on the Lifetime network. However, it seems as though Aaliyah’s family isn’t on board! Lifetime plans to start filming this summer, but Aaliyah’s uncle and former manager, Barry Hankerson, tells us the family is very upset that no one from the network contacted them about the movie, and they plan to block any attempt on Lifetime’s part to use any of Aaliyah’s music. They’ve apparently hired a lawyer and will do everything they can to block release of the flick. He adds, though, that while they’re not opposed to a big, theatrical film, they feel a TV movie is too small for someone as big as Aaliyah. While I do kind of agree with them, I also feel Lifetime definitely does some amazing films, and TV movies don’t always go in vain. Look at the TLC biopic! I am confused as to how they’re going forward on a movie about her life without the family on board, though. SOMEONE has to be signing off on something somewhere, no?

(Photos) An Aaliyah Biopic May Be Coming To VH1…Starring Who?

It’s been years in the making, but finally, it looks like this Aaliyah biopic will be coming into fruition. A few months back, the late singer’s uncle/former manager, Barry Hankerson, took to Twitter with a movie poster, revealing that a movie about Aaliyah’s life would be coming to VH1 on August 25, 2014…the 13-year anniversary of her untimely death. (Crazy that it’s been so long, huh?) No more details were revealed, but since then, little details have trickled in…including a few contenders for the coveted starring role. When the movie was first talked about years ago, Keshia Chante (who now is the host of 106 & Park, but then was just a singer on the comeup) was said to have nabbed the starring role, and it looks like there still may be something there. Taking to her Instagram just a few days ago, Keshia posted a photo of Aaliyah with the caption, “The Audition.” Apparently actress Tristin Mays was in the running as well, but in the end, she didn’t make the cut. Check out what she had to say below, as well as a few other rumored contenders for the role.

Queen Bey paid her respects to the late-great R&B songbird Aaliyah by posting a bunch of flicks onto her Tumblr page rockin’ a shirt with the singer’s face on it. (Video) Drake Previews New Aaliyah Collabs In NYC Club

Last night, Drake (alongside yours truly) hit up NYC hot spot Griffin, and after about an hour of passing around Ace of Spades bottles like they were glasses of water, he had his road manager CJ run to the car to grab his laptop, and he hit the booth for a set from DJ Drizzy. After playing some of his own cuts and a few popular songs, the YMCMB rapper previewed two unreleased collabs he has in the can with the late Aaliyah. One of which he briefly previewed on Instagram last month, the other we hadn’t heard yet at all. Many are deeming this move a bit controversial, as her mother has previously spoken out against the music. But I mean, doesn’t hurt to let people bump to it while they’re partying, right? What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments! Shout to French Montana, Trav and JR Smith who were in the building last night as well!
