Last night, a tribute was held at the legendary Apollo Theater in honor of A Tribe Called Quest’s Phife Dawg, who we lost last week at the age of 45. SO many powerful people came out to pay tribute to his legacy, including Andre 3000 – who revealed that once upon a time, there were talks of a joint ATCQ x Outkast album. IMAGINE THE GEMS?! “About a year or two ago maybe, we were talking about doing a Tribe Called Quest and OutKast album,” 3 Stacks said, explaining that “personal issues” then got in the way. “Please people, don’t let the time go by. That’s one of the biggest things that I regret now. For whatever reason we didn’t do it, it was on our plate and we just… let it go.” Kanye West also spoke, jokingly noting, “Anything I ever did wrong, blame Tip and Phife ‘cause ya’ll raised me.” Also in attendance were Busta Rhymes, KRS-One, Queen Latifah, LL Cool J, Lauryn Hill and more. Just truly goes to show Phife’s influence on the world, huh? What a beautiful thing. Rest in beats!

Phife Dawg, of the legendary hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, recently had a sit down with Rolling Stone and revealed that the group “didn’t get nothing” after the release of their most popular song “Can I Kick It?.” According to Phife Dawg, due to their heavy sampling of Lou Reed’s “Walk On The Wild Side” which their record label Jive never had cleared, all the royalties to the song went straight to Lou Reed.
