Longtime 60 Minutes news correspondent Bob Simon passed away after being involved in a fatal car crash in New York City at approximately 7 PM. He was riding in the backseat of a Town Car when it collided with a Black Mercedes and hit a median. Simon was taken to Roosevelt Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. According to reports, “The Town Car was so badly mangled, rescuers had to pry open the roof to extract him from the rear of the car.” The driver of Simon’s car was also taken to Roosevelt Hospital where he suffered from two broken legs, but he is currently listed in stable condition. Reports show that the driver might have possibly suffered from a heart attack either during the crash or before. The 23-year-old driver of the Mercedes said, “He swerved into me. He hit me and he looked like he lost control of the car.” Simon was found unresponsive with extreme head and stomach injuries, according to the police. CBS News President David Rodes released a statement on Simon’s tragic death. He said, “Bob Simon was a giant of broadcast journalism, and a dear friend to everyone in the CBS News family. We are all shocked by this tragic, sudden loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bob’s extended family and especially with our colleague Tanya Simon.” Our prayers go out to Simon and his entire family. May he rest in peace!
