As part of the Future Project initiative, which helps bring some brightness into the lives of inner city children with some rough upbringings, Erykah Badu surprised students at Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark, NJ this week. Appearing in the cafeteria as the kids entered for what they thought would be a normal lunch, Ms. Badu gave them quite the treat with a live performance of “On and On”, her remix of Kanye’s “Real Friends” and a even a preview of some unreleased music! Earlier this year, a 13-year-old Long Island teen by the name of Deandre Bloomfield was lured to the house of an alleged “friend,” and ultimately set on fire, suffering burns of the second and third degree all over his body. Having one leg longer than the other, Deandre has long been the victim of bullying, and this incident finally has others paying attention. It’s sad it took this long! According to Deandre‘s mother, the boy sprayed cologne on Deandre and then lit matches until he caught on fire. He tried to run, but because of the aforementioned disability, he was unsuccessful. The worst part? The mother and sister of the boy were present and tried to cover up the incident for TWO hours before calling police, and they’re still trying to say it was all an accident. Crazy! Touched by the story, Hot 97‘s Ebro In The Morning teamed up with Drake and OVO, and made sure that despite all of the hardships, Deandre could still have a merry Christmas. Karen Civil Teams Up With Lil Wayne To Give Back To Haiti For The Holidays
This past Friday, media maven Karen Civil’s Live Civil imprint teamed up with Lil Wayne’s Trukfit clothing line to bring a merry Christmas to over 500 students in Haiti. Scholastic Corporation and L’union Suite also pitched in to add to the holiday joy! During the Live Civil Christmas Giveaway, each child was gifted an outfit from Trukfit, as well as a Live Civil Thinking Cap from Karen’s partnership with New Era. Haitian-American professional boxer Andre Berto even surprised the kids by dressing up as Santa Claus and passing out toys, and Scholastic donated a book to each of the 500 children, while Karen did a live reading of her new book, Be You & Live Civil. This all went down at the Live Civil playground, something Karen has been working hard at building in Haiti since her 30th birthday in 2014.
