While there has been plenty of controversy surrounding the upcoming Aaliyah biopic, the show will go on. As production continues, it has been revealed that the film, which is reportedly going to depict her life from when she was 10 up to her death, will closely cover her relationship with R. Kelly. Say What?! Aaliyah’s Family Is Not On Board For Lifetime Biopic And Demands A Big Screen Release?!
It has been in the talks for a while now and now it has been reported that Lifetime is producing a biopic on Aaliyah, based on Christopher Farley’s book, Aaliyah: More Than a Woman. Zendaya Coleman has been cast to play the late singer. However, before the movie have gone into production, drama is already rising.

As we all know by now, 17-year-old Disney actress Zendaya has nabbed the role of Aaliyah in the upcoming Lifetime biopic, one that 106 & Park actress Keshia Chante was lobbying for, amongst others. It looks as though that ‘others’ included Teyana Taylor, as her friend Tyrone has her audition tape to Instagram revealing what may have been.
Aaliyah’s Family Are NOT On Board With Lifetime Biopic & Vow To Stop Production!
It was finally announced this week that 17-year-old Disney actress Zendaya Coleman would play the late Aaliyah in a biopic that has been in talks for such a long time, and it was also revealed that it would air on the Lifetime network. However, it seems as though Aaliyah’s family isn’t on board! Lifetime plans to start filming this summer, but Aaliyah’s uncle and former manager, Barry Hankerson, tells us the family is very upset that no one from the network contacted them about the movie, and they plan to block any attempt on Lifetime’s part to use any of Aaliyah’s music. They’ve apparently hired a lawyer and will do everything they can to block release of the flick. He adds, though, that while they’re not opposed to a big, theatrical film, they feel a TV movie is too small for someone as big as Aaliyah. While I do kind of agree with them, I also feel Lifetime definitely does some amazing films, and TV movies don’t always go in vain. Look at the TLC biopic! I am confused as to how they’re going forward on a movie about her life without the family on board, though. SOMEONE has to be signing off on something somewhere, no?
2014 BET Awards Nominees Announced
The 2014 BET Awards will go down on June 29th in L.A., and today, the nominees have been announced. It’s the usual suspects for the most part, but what’s interesting is the Female Rap category – as you know there isn’t much to choose from these days. At least Nicki finally has a LITTLE competition with Iggy Azalea – but check out the other nominees in the category. What do you think? Do any of them have a shot?
