Zendaya had the right idea when she backed out of the role as, Aaliyah. Alexandra Shipp on the other hand – poor girl didn’t see the slam coming. Well, she admitted to being hesitant, but the script is what pulled her in. Prior to Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B‘s airing, Shipp talked to XXL about her role in the movie and her hopes that Timbaland and Missy Elliott would like what they watched. “I went into this from a place of love and admiration. Even though all the components weren’t able to come together in the end, I’m really proud of the work I did,” she says. “I hope that they watch and that they like it.” Okay, that SHIPP – LMAO – has sailed. The forthcoming Aaliyah biopic has been shrouded in controversy since its inception, as the late singer’s family is not in support of the film, and have spoke out numerous times on their stance. For this reason, plus the backlash of many protective fans, Disney star Zendaya Coleman decided to drop out of the lead role early on. Lifetime still pushed on, however, and will finally be debuting Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B on Saturday, November 15. This weekend was THE one for award shows. Not only did MTV’s Video Music Awards pop off in a booty-tastic way, but on Friday, at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, the BMI R&B/Hip Hop Awards was jumping off.
